But so that you may understand where all this error originates—those who condemn pleasure and those who praise pain—I will lay bare the whole matter and explain those very things that were spoken by the inventor of truth and, as it were, the architect of the happy life. For no one would ever endure, hate, or flee pleasure itself simply because it is pleasure, but rather because great pains follow those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally. Nor is there anyone who loves pain itself—simply because it is pain—or seeks to acquire it; rather, it is because there are times when, through toil and pain, one seeks some great pleasure. For, to put it mildly, who among us would willingly undergo the laborious exercise of the body unless it were to yield some benefit? And who would justly reproach the one who seeks to be in that pleasure—from which no annoyance results—or the one who flees from pain because it offers no pleasure to match it?
But I must explain to you how this whole mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain came about, and I will give you a complete account of the system and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of truth, the architect of human happiness. No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself—simply because it is pleasure—but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful. Nor is there anyone who loves, pursues, or desires to obtain pain for its own sake—simply because it is pain—but because occasionally circumstances arise in which toil and pain can bring him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes strenuous physical exercise except to gain some benefit from it? But who has any right to fault a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no unpleasant consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resulting pleasure?
